Umpqua Valley Christian fell short in its upset bid against top-ranked Wallowa losing 64-56 in a quarterfinal game at the OSAA 1A Boys Basketball State Tournament in Baker City.
The Monarchs (19-9) trailed by just two points heading into the fourth quarter, but were unable to get any closer as the Cougars (20-3) moved into the semifinal round of the championship bracket thanks to the eight-point win.
Three UVC players reached double-figures including Dominic Rocco (19); Austin Stone (14); and Tyler Smith (13).
Umpqua Valley Christian plays again Friday at 9:00AM.
For the second straight year, Oakland lost two consecutive games and was eliminated from the OSAA 2A Girls Basketball State Championhip in Pendleton. The Oakers lost a heartbreaker to Scio 51-50 Thursday morning.
Oakland (20-8) lead 36-24 at halftime, but shot only 11 percent in the second half. The Loggers cut the lead to six after three quarters and completed the comeback with a 14-7 run in the final period.
Taylor McLean lead the Oakers with 18 points, including four three-pointers; Chelsea Spencer added 14 points and 14 rebounds.
