Roseburg's Dr. Stewart's American Legion baseball team is the Northwest Regional champion after dispatching Pacific Tech of Kelso, WA, 6-3 in the championship game Monday at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington.
The Docs (33-12) took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning and never trailed as Brandon Jackson threw a complete game, allowing five hits and no walks. He struck out five Pacific Tech batters.
Kelso (33-16) chipped away at a 6-0 Dr. Stewart's advantage late in the game but it wasn't enough as Johnny Farrington led the way at the plate for the Docs, going 2-for-5 with a run scored and three RBIs. Cameron Newell and Austin Stone each had two hits for the Roseburg club. Kyle Jaukkuri tripled while Mitch Huff and Jered Stoffal each doubled for the Docs.
Kelso committed five errors in the contest, which proved costly when coupled with the timely hitting of the Roseburg squad. Jaukkuri made the final out of the tournament with a catch in left field that set off a celebration with Roseburg players dog piling and congratulating each other, coaches, parents and fans.
The Docs will continue play at the American Legion World Series at Avista Field, just a couple miles away from Gonzaga University in Spokane. You can view a video report of the game below.
