Glide softball standout Alexa Skinner and Reedsport golfer Monica Vaughn are among the top eight candidates competing for the Johnny Carpenter trophy, which honors the outstanding female 4A/3A/2A/1A high school athlete in the calendar year 2010.

Skinner was named the 3A softball 'player of the year' by The Oregonian after guiding the Wildcats to the 2010 state championship game. The catcher hit .494 with three home runs and 25 RBI's, including a team-leading 12 doubles and 16 stolen bases.

At age 15, Vaughn became the youngest winner in more than 100 years of the Oregon Amateur and was named the Pacific Nothwest Golf Association 'player of the year'. She also won the Oregon Junior AM and PNGA Junior titles; and finished second at the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A state tournament.

The Oregon Sports Awards ceremony is set for Sunday, January 30 at 7:00PM at the Tiger Woods Center on the Nike World Campus.
