Roseburg Coach Receives National Honor

thurman1.jpgLongtime Roseburg head football coach Thurman Bell has added another award to his trophy case.

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) selected him as the 2011 National Coach of the Year in football. This past season, Bell led the Indians (9-3) to the Class 6A quarterfinals before being eliminated by eventual state champion Lake Oswego.

In 41 seasons at Roseburg, Bell has won 315 games making him the second winningest coach in the history of Oregon high school football. Under his guidance, RHS has won four state championships and been to the title game nine times.

Oregon is also home to the top boys tennis coach in the country. That honor went to Rich Taylor of Forest Grove High School.

The NFHS, which has been recognizing coaches through an awards program since 1982, honors coaches in the top 10 girls sports and top 10 boys sports.
