COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. -- The Douglas County Timberwolves adult football team came out on the losing end of a 54-0 shutout to the Benton Bulldogs Saturday in Cottage Grove.

The Wolves fell to 1-5 on the season and will face the Grants Pass Generals on Saturday, April 16.

At last Saturday's game, Timberwolves players and fans paid tribute and thanked veterans for their service and their families for supporting them in that service.

Additionally, Saturday's game was played in honor of Royal Nelsen, father of Timberwolves' player Joshua Nelsen.

Royal passed away two years ago, just three days before seeing his son play in his first game, the team's Facebook page said, adding that "they both loved spending time watching and talking about the game of football."

The Timberwolves play in the National Nineman Football League, an Oregon-based, veteran owned, private entity, providing young men the opportunity to continue playing the game. It has been operating for 14 years, according to the league website.
