ROSEBURG, Ore. -- Remember. Move. Unite. Those three words have inspired the communities of the Umpqua Valley to launch the Umpqua Strong 9k & 5k Run/Walk and Community Festival on Saturday, October 1, 2016.
The event takes place on the one-year anniversary of the Umpqua Community College campus shooting. On that tragic day nine lives were lost and nine others injured.
Organizers say the run recognizes the lives of each those individuals with a unique 9k distance, dedicating a kilometer to each victim. The post-race Festival will include many activities including a Kid’s Fun Run and live music.
“This area is a very special place because of the people that live here. We really want to demonstrate that we’re more than a senseless tragedy. We’re coming together as an expression of our community’s hope and determination,” said Seth Buechley, the event’s co-founder.
Beyond the organizers’ intent to unite people in the region, all of the events proceeds will fund UCC Student Scholarships in honor of each victim and in recognition of those that survived.
"On behalf of the UCC educational community, we appreciate the scholarship support from the Umpqua Strong 9K that will help the students who grace this campus achieve their dreams and aspirations," said Dr. Walter Nolte, interim President of UCC.
The event also includes a unique virtual run aspect offering those with connections to the region, or for anyone interested in supporting the Umpqua Strong mission, an opportunity to join as a remote runner.
Event management professionals, Soul Focus Sports, have been tapped to lead the virtual element as well as the overall event promotion.
“My team has been completely inspired by the strength of the Umpqua Valley communities and we hope to share that passion with the entire country via this event,” said J.T. Service, Soul Focus CEO who recently visited the area to begin event preparations.
Event organizers hope to put the town on display with courses beginning in Stewart Park highlighting lush park trails and the historic downtown of this Southern Oregon gem.
“While we will always remember those lost on October 1st, positive events like this help our community heal and also move forward. “said Roseburg Mayor Larry Rich. “We’re excited to welcome visitors to the area.”
