160421 Sutherlin Cheer All-Academic TeamSUTHERLIN, Ore. -- The Sutherlin Cheer squad topped the entire state of Oregon, earning the Academic All-State Award for Cheerleading during the winter athletics season.

This was for all classifications -- 6A through 1A. Sutherlin is a Class 4A school.

And it wasn't even close. The Bulldogs scored an overall GPA of 3.90, .19 points ahead of second-place Central Catholic. (See the entire Top 10 list below.)

Teams that earn a 3.0 GPA or higher receive 25 points for their school in The Oregonian Cup standings, OSAA says.

The program recognizes outstanding achievement in the classroom. The boys and girls team in each OSAA-sanctioned activity with the highest team grade point average earns the Academic All-State Award.

Each member of a winning team receives a much-coveted sling bag, commemorative bag tag and a certificate. The school receives a plaque in honor of its team.

Members of top ten schools in each activity at each classification are also recognized with a commemorative bag tag, OSAA says.
