OAKLAND, Ore. -- The Roseburg Road Runners and Friends of Mildred Kanipe Memorial Park are hosting the seventh annual 9K Trail Run and a 5k Fun walk/run to be held at the park July 9. The run and walk starts and finishes at the day use area.

The route will runs through oak savannahs, a thick forest of Douglas Fir, mostly on singletrack trails. Despite the July 9 date, runners will stay cool as about 70% of the course will be under the shade of trees.

"This is Oregon and there is plenty of poison oak but we will be inspecting and trimming the trails prior to race to help eliminate direct contact," the event website says.

There is one hill in the 5k and two in the 9k. It's a fairly technical trail - which means that there will be roots, rocks, and uneven footing. The start and finish are on a wide dirt road.

Spectators can visit some of the historic displays as they cheer for their friends. Officials say to visit the new completed campground in the equestrian area. Also, new geocaches have been hidden at the park for discovery. If you want an easy walk, stroll through the nature trail. Awards will be presented at the end of the run in the Public Picnic Area.

Early online registration is $30/9K or $20/5K which includes your race and a commemorative t-shirt. This year they are offering a choice of women's or men's t-shirt.

Register on race day for $25/9K or $15/5k (t-shirt not included). Purchase a t-shirt, if available, on race day for $15.

All fees include a complimentary Friends membership.

Registration on race day is from 7 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. The race starts at 8:30 a.m.
